O’Connell Announces for Mayor Putting People First
Taunton, MA …Today State Representative Shaunna O’Connell announced her candidacy for Mayor of Taunton.
“As a lifelong resident, the future of Taunton is very important to me. I am deeply committed to making a better future for all families,” said O’Connell. “Ronald Reagan once said ‘All great change in America begins at the dinner table.’ It does start at home. I grew up here in Taunton. I am raising my family here. My heart belongs to Taunton. I believe that now is the time to bring new leadership to the city with a vision of revitalizing our community, keeping our neighborhoods safe, and holding the line on taxes and fees. Most importantly, I will work to be a responsive Mayor for Taunton who puts people first.”
O’Connell is a lifelong Taunton resident. After her parents divorced, she and her siblings moved to low-income housing with their mom. During that time O’Connell worked several jobs, including food service at Morton Hospital. She eventually became a department supervisor and worked her way through school. Before successfully running for State Representative, O’Connell was a self-employed court reporter. She lives on Worcester Street with her husband Ted and their two daughters.
“I know all too well the many challenges my fellow Tauntonians face. That’s why I will to strive to make our city not a gateway city, but rather, a leading city for the Commonwealth where people have greater economic opportunities. I want our children to be able to live in the community where they grew up and find good paying jobs. We must have a positive vision and roadmap for the future of Taunton,” said O’Connell.
O’Connell was elected State Representative in 2010. As a legislator, she has been a leader on welfare reform saving taxpayers millions of dollars. She has also fought for child safety issues, fiscal accountability, and more transparency within state government and at the State House. She established the Small Business Caucus to help local employers advance their needs in the House of Representatives. Most recently, she has been a leading advocate for an audit of the RMV to uncover identity theft and fraud. As the Taunton/Easton Representative, O’Connell has been extremely accessible. She holds regular office hours, door knocks in off-election years to meet with constituents, conducts meetings, participates in numerous local programs and is a member of the Elks, Taunton Area Vietnam Veterans Association, Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce, YMCA Board of Governors, Women’s Recovery and Addiction Program Human Rights Committee, Kiwanis, Prince Henry Society, Taunton Polish-American Citizens Club, Old Colony Historical Society, Woman At The Well Board of Directors, and Mass Coalition for Suicide Prevention.
O’Connell has kept her promises of being available, holding the line on taxes, and opting out of the state’s retirement system. She has earned awards and recognition from the National Federation of Independent Business, Restaurant and Business Alliance, and Friends of Government Accountability. O’Connell has a perfect record in standing up for taxpayers.
O’Connell has also been recognized as Reader’s Choice Favorite Politician three years in a row, 2016 Exceptional Legislator, and for her contributions to Disabled American Veterans, Taunton Area School to Career Mentor Program, and Co-Op.
O’Connell passed legislation to help our veterans and fund the local Dementia Friendly program, Cory’s Cause, and the Weir Street Fire Station.“Taunton’s best years are to come. I never shy away from a tough challenge. I follow the courage of my convictions to do what is right. I want to be the facilitator in growing the future of Taunton,” added O’Connell.
